I wonder if the monk replied: Dear Abbot, the Word of God must always stand above the word of man. Who do you think you are, that you can see something that has escaped the divines of the centuries, and many a better scholar than you? Martin, don't you know: We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us." I can just imagine what Martin Luther's counselor told him in his office when the monk of tender conscience came to him with a troubled mind: "Martin, pray that God will forgive your arrogance and presumption. "Abraham believed God"-and that's all you and I can do, at the end of the day. "Abraham believed God"-knowing that different preachers and professors teach opposing and contradictory things, and theologies are not infallible, but go awry. "Abraham believed God"-and not what well-meaning pastors or little old ladies told him about God. It jumped out at me with all its loaded implications: "Abraham believed God"-and not man. I read the statement "Abraham believed God" ( Galatians 3:6). I was thinking of this during my morning Bible reading. The Apostle Paul called that a damnable heresy, not commendable shoulder-standing. They gradually had us paying money to get souls out of Purgatory, and worst of all they had us thinking that salvation was to be had by a combination of following regulations, maintaining membership in a visible church, and believing in Jesus. They had slipped off the shoulders of the Apostles in the book of Acts in major ways. The shoulders that Martin Luther was asked to stand on were not good shoulders. (To my undying appreciation, he let me have my two cents anyway.) One of my editors answered that we "stand on the shoulders" of those who came before. I suggested in an essay proposing seminary reform that we might do well to spend most of our precious class time reading the Bible rather than hallowing the doctrinal formulations of the 16th century. Even to suggest a problem with this maxim is to invite censure. One such saying is that we "stand on the shoulders" of those who came before us. They achieve the status of self-evidentiality by dint of repetition. If you think you may have a medical emergency, call your physician or 911 immediately. There are statements we circulate credulously without examining them. Good luck and remember one thing, your not losing your mind and your not alone. I'm 60 now and symptoms started about 4 years ago with a total of 3 occurances. Luckily I have been in the house doing activities. So weird but I don't believe it's anything to lose sleep over, trust me if we share the same thing it passes and if I was driving I believe I could pull over. I haven't had any symptoms this year yet so how could it be neck or back? But I have had heavy arms several months apart now nothing. I've wondered about a chemical in food we have all eaten or is it our spines or back. It's not debilitating, painful or consistent so I live with it. It's so straI haven't been to a Doctor because so many others report the identical story with Doctor's putting their hands in the air after blood tests etc. After the weakness subsides in a few minutes I'm good to go. I follow the medical reports when they appear and what we share is identical. I made a posting on here a few years back you would enjoy reading. ![]() No pain, no blurriness or such as others have had. Lasts about a minute with no other symptoms. Warm feeling in my neck and shoulder area followed by super heavy arms and sudden weakness.
